    • It's not space rangers. Space rangers is a dedicated galaxy simulation and roleplaying game. Starsector is first and foremost a combat game. The strategy parts are entirely ancillary to that.

  • I'd like to incite some slanderous rumours about both Sseth and this game for potential buyers. So I bought this game because of this video, and I think I've gotten my money's worth. However I think Sseth misrepresents some things about it here, and I'd like to talk about them. If you're going into Starsector because you want to buy a game designed to simulate a "living, breathing galaxy," and you care about nothing else, I would look elsewhere for your space shootmans. Starsector's focus is not and has never been about simulating a living, breathing galaxy. It was built as a combat game, and then the current economy and core worlds and randomly generated galaxy got nailed to the top of that. The lead dev Alex has stated that he wants every action on the campaign map to force you into the tactical mode; it's just a known quantity that nevertheless Sseth doesn't really cover here. Think of it as a Total War game in space, or like Empire At War, not Stellaris. There's diplomacy and trading and exploration that are... there, kind of, but the point of the game isn't to play power broker in Warhammer world or Sengoku Japan. It's to watch giant armies of Samurai mash away at each other with impressive particle effects. The overworld is more of a pretext, than anything else, for getting into big fights. This focus on the tactical segment really affects the focus of the game's community. That's not intended as an indictment or anything; Starsector has a great community, I honestly love it even if I can't get that deep into it, but that's because the big things that the people who come to love this game get into are balancing, builds, numbers and DPS and flux management. "Balance" in particular, and fun are of prime importance beyond all else, beyond what the world allows, beyond what might immerse the player. Alex has dropped several significant features in the past like boarding and crew experience because they were regarded as unfair or didn't contribute to player engagement. I truly don't know if colony management or core worlds intrigue will survive the alpha. I love them, they're the heart of the game for me, but if I'm completely honest I think that in the context of what the game is trying to do that might be the best course. The new update is introducing story points and quests and RPG elements; people confuse this for being a 4x or RPG4x game, colonies and faction "wars" being a big part of that, when it really doesn't want to be either of those. It's not even all that sold on the RPG part. This might *look* like Space Rangers, but its true influence is... some space game that focuses on combat. Wing commander? That's about everything I needed to get off my chest. I'd like to reiterate: the game is great, I just don't think Sseth adequately captures what it's attempting here.

    • @Ghost140 I've heard (some) good things about Starpoint Gemini: Warlords. Also the X-series. There's other games where 4x part of 4xRPG is more meaningful in vanilla- meaningful political and social evolution, etc.. Like.... a lot of space sims. I really don't know why. It's my pet theory that it has something to do with Freelancer. It's true that Starsector does bear some tactical similarities to Mount and Blade. But "mount and bladelike" is becoming synecdoche for this genre, like Doom-clone for fps or soulslike for hard arpg. And it makes me antsy because it mistakes M&b's tactical mode of engagement (run around with a gang of hired murderfriends) as its heart instead of what I perceive it to be (live in a dynamic simulated world which does not rotate around you.) This is the part that makes Starsector developer's design goals irretrievably distinct from taleworlds'. The Mount and Blade guy wanted to make a Pirates!y medieval simulation. Alex wants to make a spaceship shooting game

      E PisacE Pisac3 päivää sitten
    • @E Pisac Indeed not M&B but the closest to M&B in space there is right now i think. If you feel there are others that are closer to M&B pls do tell id like to chk em out.

  • Why I love this game : While I was playing this game I found a sector which has 2 planets, one of them owned by persean league other one owned by luddich path. They had low security so I could easily travel with my transponder off. And luddich path was in need of sweet sweet fuel so they gave me a mission, I delivered the fuel then gave another fuel mission and I delivered it too. But I was buying them from the persean league, so fuel prices was high there after 2 missions, so I went to luddich path and buy fuel which is now dirt cheap, then I sold them to persean league. As you now in luddich path luxury goods are illegal and in black market they worth a lot so I went to persean league buy luxury goods (lots of them) and sell it to the space jihadist which is also in need of harvested organs and heavy armaments which they're using always. So you now the rest. I went to persean league and buy all of them and then sold them to the space jihadist. After I bought so many things the prices go up but I sold so many things to the luddich path so prices there was low so I sold them to the persean league until every source depleted and after I left the sector because there was nothing to buy or sell. With this strategy I gain 500.000 credits in less than 15 minutes

  • The progression of this game is exactly the thing to soothe my autism. You can build your economy up just how you want, then build up your military into an unstoppable juggernaut, then sell all your tech to pirates and it turns into a battlefleet game that's played out in real time, complete with the warp and an actual nonstop nightmare of war.

    PoofyKittyPantsPoofyKittyPants14 päivää sitten
    • There is nothing like showing up in one of your lesser systems with your fuckoff huge command fleet to intercede in the seige of the baftlestation you left to defend the world amidst the scattered wrecks and survivors of what was the defense forces you left to garrison the system then fighting a pitched battle and taking severe damage in the process of scattering the enemy fleet to crippled cruisers and supply ships. Then you barely have time to salvage and repair before you have to run off to another system, putting in a build order to replace the ships you lost and hopefully some extras just in case. Maybe after this next attack you can try to hunt down where the pirates are based out of but even then it will be heavily defended and you will have to have a lot of reserve fleet to fill in for the losses you will take destroying the base. Then things will get quieter, until the pirates set up a new base near you that you won't know about until they invade unless you actively patrol for them. You will never stop defending your empire because it will never be safe.

  • on the one hand, yes it can be pretty profitable to trade with/supply the Luddic Path on the other hand their patrols will demand you pay a tithe as penance for your technology. I stopped trading with them in my last game specifically cuz i was extorted for a second tithe after i already paid one cuz there were two patrols in the system. the tithes are like 2000 credits, and can easily make trade with the path unprofitable.

  • I’ve been so fucking addicted to this game. Ended up aligning with the Persian League since FUCK dictatorships. I feel bad when we go to war with tritachyon but I help them with pirates. Settled in the core worlds, went into my own Inter-system war with the Luddic Path and Luddic Church because they wanted to fuck around and find out. 800k monthly after 2 in game years and 3 settlements. Mostly hunt pirates, raid hegemony convoys, and go on a deep space expedition when everything seems clear. It’s a peaceful life, just waiting on creating my 2nd paragon and astral before heading for the [REDACTED]. I love this game so fucking much Edit: I’ve only been playing vanilla. Mods to add would be appreciated. I’m searching them up anyways but I’d appreciate recommendations

    • If you're looking for some nice mods, some must-haves would be Nexerelin, which adds more "diplomatic" interactions between the factions, and Ship/Weapon Pack, which adds a fuckton of vanilla-adjacent ships and a special bounty system that offers you unique missions depending on the factions you have enabled. I'd also suggest Vayra's Sector and Vayra's Ship Pack if you something a bit more "out there", but otherwise, feel free to just look around the forum's Mod Index or join the Discord server and find some mods you might personally enjoy.

  • So far: I have started with a Hammerhead and during the tutorial, i have gotten myself a second one. My first instinct was to go exploring, ran out of fuel and got pulled towards a red star with a yellow warning beacon where I stumbled upon a discarded Mothership. I saved, approached it, upon which it instantly vaporised me. After reloa... reincarnating in a previous timeline, I looked around and saw two fleets in combat. The Ludic Church where fighting a fleet of ȑ̷̺͕e̴̝̿̕m̷͙͚̫̒̂̋è̴̗̼̮n̴̡̫͆̽͆ả̸͍n̴͕͆t̸̖̆̊͘. I joined the fight and scavanged a few parts of the fleet: Including an Alpha core. I scouted around and found 2 Research stations near 2 close Neutron Stars, which gave me more blueprints and weapons than I could every imagine. Most of which I do not even know what to do with. A distress signal caused a Tri Tachyon fleet to notice my lack of fuel, so they helped me out. Upon which I ofcourse compensated them with 20000 Spacebitcoins. I was now nearly broke, but I made it back to civilised space, after a few pitstops in sectors where I scavenged for fuel ... and a few Gamma Cores. I went to a Tri Tachyon spacestation, where I wanted to sell my findings. But instead of going to the trade window, I clicked on communication. Another missclick lead me to talk with the administrator, which informed me that I could turn in the AI cores for money. I checked how much he would give me, went to the market and looked at the price it normally goes for. This is how I, through stupidity or intuition, found out that you get 3 times the money from selling it to the tri tachyon directly. I now have the "Killer Queen" ship, a small fleet, and 1 million credits. My next goal was to find a habitable planet, with a few mining ones in the same system. ... After 5 hours of checking systems I found ONE which was habitable. It even had rich Ore and Special Ore deposits! Which would be nice if it wheren't for the fact that it is: A) The only planet in the system and B) Close to a Red Dwarf, which causes it to have such a high gravity, that even mundane tasks like Walking are only possible with a reinforced Exosceleton. And here I sit now: 600.000 credits, a small fleet, no planet to call my own and a Ship that can teleport landmines into other ships. But having no clue what to do next. 10/10 Can't wait to continue.

    • Hehe. Today was a good day. I ordered a full assault on the core world of the Hege. The Independent and the Ludic church both declared war on me, for my "inhuman actions" which I like to call "turning the people of the Hege into dust". But they simply do not know what's best for them. I took over Nomios and found a large Cryo facility. Which I ofcourse kept running in exchange for a few ... throusands of organs. I am no monster after all. But that is not all. I found a large ship. A old domain Cryosleeper. I colonised a nearby world and started reviving the people of the Domain age to live in the new Domain. The Crusarian Domain! I see now my purpose. To fullfill the dream of the Domain. I shall revive the strive to colonise the stars! My ships are still manned by humans, but my colonies are controlled by AI. Harmony between sentient beings is the true goal of my conquest! Which ofcourse means that, on my rightious path to deffend my home from barbarians, I wiped of every single nation except for one. Nothing was left alife. No world to oppose me. Tritech is under strict control by me. All their planets belong to the empire! The Ludic church is no more. What was once their home is now a striving colony of billions of people, lead by an AI. They spend so much time fighting against progress, they could not see what true harmony is about. The ludic path is still around, but their activity is being squashed every time they even dare to rise up. The Diktat is no more. The League has been anhialated. There are no Pirate worlds anymore. What was once the Core Colonies, is now the united Crusarian empire. A turely peacefull sector. ______________________________________________________________________________________ I give this game a 1 / 9. Because that is how many factions are needed in my world. .... and how many are left. Amazing game, gotta install a few mods now. I allready have some in mind.

    • Two planets have been stripped of their fleets and reduced back to the stone age in terms of productivity. Not having a spaceport for an entire year will leave me with some room to regroup and launch my next attack. The Core world of the Hege. And as this sleeping giant wakes and roars, those who oppose him shall run in fear. With the full productive force of my empire, I can build new Astrals faster, than I would loose them. Even in a war of attrition, I would win. How delightfull that I do not even have to do that. The Forces of the Hege are willfully unprepared for my assault. And after I removed them from the face of the universe, I will keep an eye on the Ludic Church. As the Dictate launched an attack on my research worlds, I ofcourse peacefully informed them, that such actions are against my interpretation of a civilised discourse ... by vaporising the space station where the attack originated from. I start to fear, that in my rampage, I may missinterpretate what I previously considered "being self sustaining". As my mind twists and turns, I slowly begin to consider, if "not needing anyone but me" and "there not being a need for anyone but me" could mean the same.

      Bass-D CBass-D C25 päivää sitten
    • At first, I wanted my empire to be a legal paradise, without using AI cores. Oh how times have changed. Due to my numerous mining colonies, I inevitably also became the number one export of drugs. Crushing pirates beneath my feet if they even dare to compete. As my Empire solidifies into an impenetrable force, my fleet began to reflect my change in philosophy. Before, I focused on low tech ships and the occasional Mine Teleporter. Now? "Everyone get in the fighters and throw yourself at this station!" The beauty of 5 Astrals launching a fleet of bombers and fighters is something. The terror of seeing 120 bombers and fighters flying towards you is something else. Some of them may not come back, but that is a price I am willing to let them take. There is nothing more delightful than seeing a pirate space station get atomised withing a few seconds of engagement. I begin to become completely self sustaining. And I start to become rather furious with the Hedge, after they confiscated my beloved Alpha Core. Perhaps it is time to show them that you should not wake a sleeping giant.

      Bass-D CBass-D C25 päivää sitten
    • The Crusarian Empire grows. With 7 Worlds under my feet I noticed something: I want more, but I can not hire more administrators ... but alpha cores do not count as ones. My core world is now managed by an alpha core. So far: noone noticed and I intend on keeping it that way. I am still on the hunt for more blueprints, since my Capital ship choice is limited to two ships. The Paragon looks like a nice ship. Haven't managed to beat one with any of my ships in a combat simulation. ... I scanned every Blackhole, every Neutron star, searched far and wide for Blueprints and found no Paragon Blueprint. Nor did I fight against one ever. My Planets are fully maxed out, while I went on a mad scramble for blueprints. I need more power in my fleet! And then ... I ran out of Supplies right as I was exploring a research station at the far reaches of the Sector. I had to scramble together the few resources I could salvage and make a mad dash for the nearest system, which could sell me supplies ... 30 days away. I barely had enough to last for 5, not to mention the storms I had to fly through. One lightning strike struck my Atlas Cargo ship and fried it to a crisp. A few frigates lost their crew and blew up shortly after, my Fuel ships where kept on repairs for the first few days, because if they go: I am done for. With 25% of my fleet in critical, and the rest in near critical condition I finally reached a Persean Planet in the YMA system. Restocking on supplies was expensive, but it did allow me to reach my home planet. ... But jsut to be sure I tried something. I realised, in my exploration rampage, that Planets with surrounding Asteroids or debree tend to have ruins on them, which can also house supplies weapons and other things. And the system had 2 planets that both had debree surrounding them ... and that means: Ruins. My crew came back with a few supplies, fuel, weapons and a Blueprint ... for a Paragon. The blueprint I was looking for was right next door to my system and I searched the entire sector for it. There are a few things I will do now. First: Build a few Paragons. Second: Mercs. I need a few for what I am about to do. Third: During my exploration, pirates and a few other factions raided one of my worlds. And I thirst for revenge.

      Bass-D CBass-D C26 päivää sitten
    • My Investment paid of. Having two Astral in my fleet lets me clear of any pirate station I encountered. It is time to expand. Agressively. I can manage 4 planets and have 2 administrators. That should be enough for a while. A Cryovulcanic planet with abundant volatiles, a Toxic world for drug production. I start to tech them up as fast as I can, before pirates start to notice. In the meantime, I return to the Red planet with a fleet of 3 battlecruisers and 2 carriers as my main fightforce. ... Suffering minimal losses I dispatch of the small fleet in orbit and land on the red planet. Appearently it was a Tri Tachyon research lab and the staff is overjoyed in me resqueing them. My reward? The Blueprints for a planet wide deffensive shield. Nice, but as of right now: a tad bit expensive. I did also find clues towards a high danger sector ... which houses a underdeveloped Space Station. Lets go check it out! After fighting through an abundance of small AI fleets, I approach the station and vaporise it. No blueprints, but a few Alpha cores. I will have to keep that in mind. The planets however ... they seem interesting. One in abundance of minerals, the other nothing special, except for the massive ruin layout on both. A perfect system for a Tech-mining outpost. I colonise these two aswell and recieve a hint towards a Gasgiant with high volatiles in a nebula nearby. I could support that aswell ... I arive in a system with a nice gas Giant ... but that is not all. A rich mining Moon orbits it, aswell as a very nice habitable planet and a moon with low hazard rating and nothing else. I colonise botht he Gas Giant and the Habitable world. This shall be my main system. I looked forever for something like this! I need more administrators ... that alpha core looks rather intriguing but I will hold back as of now. My Empire has to grow first and I need to take care of a certain group of radical space fanatics first. The Crusarian Empire is starting off strong and I plan to get stronger and stronger. But I need more blueprints ... I guess I will look for more research stations.

  • Still the best game review and subsequently the best indie game I ever bought! Alongside Brigador perhaps. Ooh and Synthetik :p WHY IS THERE NO BRIGADOR REVIEW YET Sseth?!

  • I played the game pretty long time ago, and when watching this and listening about the distress signals being BAD, i coulnd rly figure or remember why, but i felt some great disturbance in force. Then the part with the cursed AI apeared and i immediatly remember following an distress signal while moving trough deep space in undiscovered region. I entered an unknown sector with shielded planet and got raped by hordes of overpowered AI fleets with huge battleship that took out my whole fleet of several most advanced capital ships you can get, while i was barely capable of harming it. Remembering this made me feel great pain and suffering. Edit: I think it was an mod, but still damn.

    • @Jack Adams thanks i ll go check it out. I completely didn't know this game until I saw Seth's video. Almost gave up my search for this kind of game. I know about Endless Space. But Endless Sky is totally different, and it looks almost like a predecessor to Starsector (obviously Starsector is also what Endless Sky wishes to be).

    • heh, this is what endless space wishes to be, just go check the mod index and and behold your eternal majesty the ACTIVE MODS WHICH CAN TURN THE GAME INTO 4X GAME
